Lot #83, 2016 (with Julia Wolf)
Lot #83 was conceived as a living counterpoint to the commodified static art of the 10th Annual Central Saint Martins Art Auction at the Lethaby Gallery. As the 83rd and only unsellable "lot," the collaborative performance with artist Julia Wolf challenged the constraints of the auction format, where 82 wall-based artworks were neatly framed, numbered, and bid upon.
Responding directly to Julia Wolf’s immersive sound piece, the costume and performance animated the gallery with a force that refused to be contained—by a wall, a frame, or a price tag. Oscillating between the humorous and the uncanny, the impalpable and the fleshly, the work blurred the line between artwork and audience, spectacle and subversion.
Lot #83 interrogated the value systems embedded in the art market. It asked: What is the worth of presence? Of vulnerability? Of performance? As viewers were drawn into the unfolding choreography, they were invited not to possess, but to witness—and perhaps reconsider the invisible economies of attention, labour, and embodiment that sustain art beyond its marketable form.
